QPR left Stamford Bridge with their heads held high, despite bowing out of the FA Cup to holders and near-neighbours Chelsea.
A fluke goal in the 29th minute proved to be the difference between the West London rivals, on an afternoon when the R's impressive performance promised much for a very bright future.
Lee Camp was the unlucky culprit, as Claudio Pizarro's right foot shot bounced back off the post and hit the unfortunate keeper, before trickling over the line.
Despite the final scoreline, Rangers were by no means overawed by their hosts, with Martin Rowlands and Gavin Mahon at the heart of their efficient display.
Luigi De Canio handed new signings Mahon, Matthew Connolly and Fitz Hall their full QPR debuts at Stamford Bridge. read more »
Matt Johnston - Much has been made of the Diaby and Eduardo tackles and I have to voice my agreement that the two are indistinguishable except that Eduardo was unlucky to have had his foot planted. The FA and FIFA have cracked down on such hard challenges, ordering referees to show the red card in such situations, but in reality what else can be done to prevent such challenges? Also, any rumors or word on what the FA and the Referees Association is going to do about the disrespect being shown to referees of late? read more »
Newcastle United will try to redeem Arsenal’s determination and will give them a full 90 minutes of tests to their title ambition this season.
Keegan’s Newcastle side will welcome Mark Viduka to have a return after having missed the last two fixtures. But Emre will still out to serves his last game suspension. Joey Barton, although he is joining the team on training, will not get involved.
The shine again Shola Ameobi is in little doubt, but could figure in the last minute of the team selection tomorrow. Geremi, Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye and Oba Martins are all still away for the African Cup of Nations in Ghana. But it looks like we will have the trio back soon.
For the home side, Tomas Rosicky who limped out of Saturday’s FA Cup clash with a knee injury, at the Emirates, is in a major doubt to be available again on Tuesday. read more »
February marked the beginning of several storylines for 2008 as well as the beginning of the end of for a few teams and managers. Blues keeper says the side have been boosted ahead of the League Cup Final by players returning from injuries and African Cup of Nations duties
Thierry_Henry - From your point of view, do you think Setanta Sport which charges $15/m in Canada will have any success? I think the Premier League might be squeezing its loyal subscribers out. I don't think there are many people in Canada who are soccer crazy enough to pay that kind of money. If it was hockey, yes. but soccer... I doubt. It's only the die hard or professional analysts like you who will pay for it. I had a few friends from Africa who used to wake up every morning to watch the EPL, but now they don't really bother...btw 300,000 subscribers in china on pay tv. wow. that is not even enough. how much do they pay per month? $15? read more »
EVEN as Egypt celebrated their record sixth triumph in the African Cup of Nations on Sunday night, those connected to England's leading clubs would be trying to compute ho
African Cup of Nations After going four-for-four in the quarter finals of the African Cup of Nations it was just too good to last and although both my semi final picks have made it through to a final game it has turned out to be for third place rather than the actual final. Although Ghana enjoyed an edge in the play a lack of sharpness in the penalty box cost them a place in the final. Cameroon was bound to create and take a chance and sure enough it happened. Apart from the goal an outstanding moment was Geremi's 30+ yard free kick that hit the junction of the bar and the post - an absolute cracking shot. I thought the Egyptian back four looked a bit perturbed by the physical play on Angolas Manucho in the quarter finals and felt that Drogba would cause the defense nightmares. read more »

Brian Furtig got to live one of my dreams. While I sit here cutting and pasting articles about African football, all the while closed to watching the Cup of Nations (I will watch my first complete match tomorrow), Brian traveled around Ghana and got to experience the atmosphere of the Cup. Frutig, a law student at William & Mary School of Law and a Chelsea FC season ticket holder who has lived in the United States and the United Kingdom, wrote a fans journal during the African Cup of Nations tournament. read more »
